How to Hit Iron Shots

Picture
PRE-SHOT
*Evaluate your lie & *Select an iron that will still reach the green if you miss-hit the shot
GOOD LIES
  • - grass laying in the direction of the target
  • - ball sitting up & light/thin blades of grass
BAD LIES
  • - grass laying away from the direction of the target
  • - ball sitting down & heavy/thick blades of grass

SET-UP
*ALWAYS tee the ball up on the tee-box
*When choosing a target to play at, aim at something above the target.
(top of a tree, chimney on a house ect.)
*Set your hands slightly forward to promote a downward blow
*Ball position generally in the middle of your feet
*Focus your eyes towards the front of the ball for cleaner contact

EXECUTION
*A full shoulder turn is a good swing thought.
*Never try to scoop/lift the ball in the air. Use a more lofted club to hit it higher!
*Longer irons- shallow divots   Shorter irons- deeper divots
*DONT keep your head down the entire swing

Q & A
*Are your irons built for you?
*Understanding your Lie angles is critical. Example: A club that is too upright will
close the face at impact - which may not be a bad thing if you constantly fight a slice.
*Why do you hit behind the ball more often with your wedges?
